Hampshire & Isle of Wight Women’s Football Team Return to Action in Charity Double-Header
On Sunday, 18 May, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight (HIOW) Women’s Football Team made a long-awaited return to the pitch, playing their first fixture in over five years. Hosted at Romsey Town Football Club, the team faced Hampshire Charity FC in the opening match of a charity football double-header, supporting important causes including Crohn’s & Colitis UK.
The day also featured a men’s match between Hampshire Charity FC and International Surrey Football, with both fixtures aiming to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s & Colitis UK. The event took place in glorious sunshine and was preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of firefighters Jennie Logan and Martyn Sadler, who tragically died in the line of duty the previous week.
Match Report: A Hard-Fought Return
Led by PSI Emma Hoggett, the HIOW women’s side took to the field for the first time as a unit, with many players meeting just hours before kick-off. Despite the new-look lineup, the match began with a competitive edge and chances at both ends.
It was Hampshire Charity FC who struck first through Zoe Ridley around the 30-minute mark. HIOW responded well, winning a penalty shortly before half-time thanks to Shannon Albuery, who stepped up to convert and bring the score level at the break.
HIOW started the second half strongly, scoring twice to establish a 3–1 lead. The first came from DC Rebecca Deacon, who finished smartly from Albuery’s corner. Amelia Primmer then extended the lead with a composed finish inside the box.
Hampshire Charity FC mounted a late comeback. Sophie Carpenter reduced the deficit, and shortly after, a defensive interception by Lydia Moulding deflected into her own goal, levelling the score at 3–3.
In the closing stages, both sides pushed for a winner under sweltering conditions. Albuery came closest, striking the crossbar from a free kick. Ultimately, the honours were shared in what was an evenly matched and entertaining contest.
Looking Ahead
Following the game, team captain Emma Hoggett shared her thoughts:
“It was a pleasure to lead this group. You wouldn’t think that we’d never played together before. The experience was a lot of fun and looking forward, hopefully we can arrange matches on a more regular basis.”
The team now look ahead to their next challenge — participating in the PSUK Women’s 7-a-side Football Tournamentin Guildford this June.
