PSUK Cross Country Championships, 6 March 2024, Chatsworth, Derbyshire.

We managed to secure the parkland of what is one of the country’s finest stately homes for this year’s race by kind permission of the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth House. They were remarkably accommodating and we send them our thanks.

It turned out to be one of those lovely spring days which not only helped massively with the event logistics but gave us the chance to show the Peak District at its finest.

From a combined men and women’s entries of 403, 339 turned out to race.

The courses took in a bit of everything: flat, sloping (not hilly by Derbyshire standards), soft, firm, smooth, rough and always scenic.

The ladies race was won in commanding style by Nichola Jackson from Cumbria, nearly two minutes ahead of the battle which had been playing out between Natalie Farrow of Lincolnshire and Lucy Niemz of Staffordshire.

The men’s race was a much closer battle for the line. Robert Sparkes from Humberside and last year’s winner Jason Bennett from West Midlands were shoulder to shoulder as they crossed the wide open area to this finish. As they reached the finish it was Sparkes who just managed to overhaul Bennett by a second. Harry Paton from the Met was third.

The results are attached for your scrutiny but do nothing to convey what a tremendous day it was.

It was rounded off with a presentation function at the Palace Hotel in Buxton where the dance floor remained full until the midnight curfew came around.”
