The 2025 Men’s Police Rugby Finals Day was played at the historic home of Sale FC Rugby, Heywood Road. This is the ground where the team formed in 1861 played top level rugby until the Sale Sharks formed moved to Edgeley Road in 2003. Legends such as Steve Hanley, Mark Cueto MBE and Dean Richards have all played top flite games on this pitch and were the inspirational guest speakers at the event. Moving into the modern era we have seen Tom and Ben Curry, along with Sale Sharks and USA Women’s captain Georgie Lilly Perris-Redding run out. I was delighted to have three games being played here today and it will be a day that sits long in the memory of players who take part.

Huge credit goes to David Fraser-Darling from TeamPolice, our Sponsors without whom the day would simply not have been achievable – thank you to Magnet Forensics, Content Guru and Salesforce!

The day saw many senior officers from across the country attend including CC Mark Roberts and CC Richard Lewis, along with RFU representatives Sir Bill Beaumont, Rob Anderson and Robert Udwin.

This year saw some fiercely contested matches and a number of games could have gone either way. In the Plate Surrey led 30-7 at half time before the Scottish Saltires roared back to take a 32-30 lead with minutes to go. With virtually the last kick Surrey scored a penalty to take thrilling 33-32 lead.

In the Shield Nottinghamshire recorded a 43-30 victory which was tight until the last ten minutes where the dominant rolling maul brought the win home.

Finally in the Cup South Wales continued their dominance with a 60-17 win against the Scottish Thistles for their 4th title in a row.

As well as having a great event there was also a charity auction with items donated by British Police Rugby, Sale FC Rugby and TeamPolice. The main prize of two tickets to hospitality at The Kia Oval Hospitality for the International cricket was won by two PCs from Scotland and West Mercia – a phenomenal gift from XPS Group raising £1139 for The Police Treatment Centres and the Sale FC Rugby Foundation.
