11th USPE EPC Men’s Volleyball 2022 Preliminary Round 18 June 2022

The Sport Scotland National Training Centre at Largs was the venue for double thrills as PSUK Men’s Volleyball Team took on Finland in back-to-back matches for a spot at the European Championships later this year.

In a postponed fixture that was due to include Russia, both the UK and Finland showed great quality and mutual respect in a contest where the score lines of 3-0 and 3-1 do little to reflect the hard fought and more evenly matched games. An encounter that was all the more poignant with the deeply felt absence of the Men’s Coach and long-term player, Phil Gachagan, who had very sadly succumbed to cancer just weeks before.

Finland had the edge on power and the UK played some excellent defence which combined to give an entertaining and fast-paced spectacle. While never really threatening the result in the first match, the second encounter was more finely balanced with the UK Men winning their first set in European competition. The games were played with an excellent spirit and the referees praised both teams for their attitude and technical ability.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable day for both sets of players and all those who spectated. We wish good luck to Finland as they progress to the finals.
