On the weekend of 7th and 8th May 2022, South Yorkshire Police hosted the national PSUK Women’s Football Tournament at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park in Sheffield. It was a welcome return for the tournament, after Covid prevented it going ahead in 2020 and 2021.
With 12 teams competing, made up of 13 forces, there were three mini-leagues on Saturday to determine who would reach the knockouts on Sunday. 8 teams progressed into knockouts with the remaining four having a mini-knockout where West Mids came out on top, beating the joint team of Northamptonshire & WYP.
Matches lasted 30 minutes one way, and it often proved difficult for teams to find a deciding goal, particularly during the knockouts, with 7 of the 10 matches requiring sudden death penalty shoot outs.
The eventual winners of the tournament were Police Scotland (main photo), beating Lancashire (at right) on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Congratulations to the team on retaining the trophy! Next year’s hosts are yet to be decided but after this year’s success, the competition will surely be a good one!
Player of the final: Taylor Gregson (Lancashire)
Top goalscorer: Chelsey Jukes (Cheshire), 11 goals
