The Police Sport UK (PSUK) women’s golf teams delivered outstanding performances in their annual matches against the Armed Forces, securing impressive victories over both the Army and Royal Navy this summer.
PSUK Dominates Army 11-1 at St Michaels
The annual clash with the Army took place at St Michaels Golf Club, Leuchars, over the weekend of June 30th-July 1st, 2025. Day one saw perfect weather conditions with bright sunshine as PSUK secured a commanding 4-0 victory in the four-ball better-ball format, though the sunny conditions left several players with notably tinted faces by day’s end.
The singles matches on day two provided plenty of drama and memorable moments. The day began with an wayward tee shot ricocheting off the first tee that nearly took out the entire PSUK team before disappearing for good. However, Team Captain Fiona Pennie quickly restored order with a spectacular hole-in-one at the 7th hole. PSUK dominated the singles, winning seven matches with the Army managing just one victory.
Final Result: PSUK 11-1 Army
The PSUK team comprised Jackie Starkie (West Yorkshire), Ailsa Cackett (Police Scotland), Emma Wood (Lincolnshire), Beth Jones (North Wales), Ali Lancashire (Merseyside), Captain Fiona Pennie (Scotland), Isla Craigie, and Cori Lee (Police Scotland).
PSUK Overcomes Weather and Navy 9-3 at Hill Valley
Three weeks later, PSUK faced the Royal Navy at Hill Valley Golf Club, Whitchurch, on July 20th-21st. The opening day’s four-ball better-ball matches were dramatically interrupted by heavy rain and thunderstorms before the first group had completed their round. With no official warning system available, common sense prevailed and play was suspended with the matches evenly poised – PSUK and the Royal Navy each leading one match, with two matches all square.
Day two’s singles format presented an additional challenge when the Navy could only field six players, requiring the first two matches to be played as three-balls with Navy players competing against two PSUK representatives each. Despite these complications, PSUK performed strongly, securing six victories, two halved matches, and suffering just one defeat.
Final Result: PSUK 9-3 Royal Navy
Captain Julie Finegan (Metropolitan Police) led a team including Beth Jones (North Wales), Bridget Moody (Devon & Cornwall), Cathy Dawson (Surrey), Ali Lancashire (Merseyside), Rachel Polson (Police Scotland), Fran O’Donnell (Metropolitan Police), and Emma Wood (Lincolnshire).
Both victories demonstrate the strength and depth of police golf talent across the UK, with representatives from forces spanning Scotland to the South West contributing to these excellent team performances.
