West Midlands Dominate PSUK Marathon Championship in Bath
Jason Bennett and Tara Malone claim individual honours at scenic railway path event
The Police Sport UK Marathon Championship took place on 12th October at the Relish Running Bath & Bristol Railway Marathon, with West Midlands Police securing a commanding team victory.
Perfect racing conditions greeted athletes at Green Park in central Bath, with temperatures around 11 degrees and minimal wind. The 10:00am start allowed for slightly warmer conditions as runners set off on the flat, out-and-back course.
Course Highlights
The scenic route took competitors alongside the River Avon through Bath city centre before joining the Avon and Kennet Canal. Athletes then merged onto the old railway line heading towards Bristol, with two long tunnels providing a unique and atmospheric section of the race.
Individual Results
Men’s Race:
- 1st: Jason Bennett (West Midlands) – 2:35:14
- 2nd: Michael Illot (Northumbria) – 2:37:31
- 3rd: Andrew Smith (West Midlands) – 2:44:12
Women’s Race:
- 1st: Tara Malone (PSNI) – 3:15:12
- 2nd: Clare Foreman (North Wales) – 3:31:09
- 3rd: Rachel Walsh (South Wales) – 3:31:34
Team Victory
West Midlands Police demonstrated exceptional strength in depth, claiming the Overall Team Award with a combined time of 8:15:33, cementing their position as the force to beat in marathon competition.
Evening Celebrations
The championship concluded with an awards presentation at the Apex Hotel, conveniently located near the event venue. Local Commander Superintendent Kristina Windsor attended to present medals and trophies to the successful athletes.
The fun and friendly atmosphere throughout the day reflected the best of police sport, with multiple distance events taking place simultaneously, providing plenty of opportunities for spectators to support and encourage participants.
